Marrakech is a city of contrast: public spectacle and private calm, centuries-old craft and modern design. Use it as a base for the Atlas, the desert routes, and Morocco’s most iconic markets, then retreat into the hush of a courtyard.

Founded in the 11th century, Marrakech grew as a trading nexus between the Sahara and the Atlantic plains. Its red ramparts and earthen architecture earned it the name “the Red City”.
The medina is a living economy of guilds: leather, metalwork, wood, and textiles, skills passed through families and workshops.

Start early: gardens and monuments feel most intimate before midday. In the afternoon, follow shade, riads, galleries, tea terraces, then return to the square at dusk when the city becomes theatre.

Marrakech is a showcase of Morocco’s table: slow-cooked tagines, grilled meats, preserved lemon, and the ritual of mint tea. The craft scene is equally rich, zellige, brasswork, leather, and woven textiles.

Marrakech excels as a hub. You can reach mountain valleys, desert-facing passes, and Atlantic towns without changing hotels every night.

Plan the day around light and heat. In peak summer, prioritize early mornings and evenings.
The medina is navigable with landmarks and patience, guides are worth it for first visits and for artisan introductions.
